Lunatic Fling

LunaticFling

Newtonian dogfighting in a wrap-around sector that's new every day. No friction, a relativistic speed limit, and a ship that falls apart one piece at a time.

The Lunatic Fling ship, white with blue wings and an orange nozzle, thrusting up and to the right.

lunatic fling noun

  1. Hurling a small spaceship at something much bigger than it, on purpose.
  2. A brief, reckless affair with a black hole.
  3. Moon madness, from the Latin luna. Symptoms include orbiting things for fun.

Every push lasts forever

There's no friction out here. Thrust and you keep going, in that direction, until you thrust the other way.

  • Momentum is the whole game. Point one way, drift another, and fire over your shoulder while you coast past.
  • The engine spools up. A tap nudges, a long burn throws you across the sector.
  • Relativity is enforced. The closer you get to the speed limit, the less each push adds. You can't outrun light, only approach it.
  • The sector wraps around. Fly off one edge and you're back on the other, and so is whatever you shot.
Lunatic Fling on iPhone: the ship coasts through open space with its engine trail behind it, the HUD at the top and the touch stick and Fire button at the bottom.

Built from parts. Held together by hope.

Hits land where they strike. Take enough in one spot and that part tears off, and the ship flies differently without it.

  • Wings

Your turning thrusters live here. Lose one and the engine pushes off-center, dragging the nose toward the wing you still have.

  • Canopy

Cracks scramble your scanner, so things flicker out of sight. Shatter it and there's no ejecting.

The ship seen from above with its parts labeled: canopy at the nose, a wing on each side, the tail fin along the spine and the nozzle at the back.
  • Tail fin

It damps the spin. Without it, every turn keeps on turning. Dent it and it can jam, yawing you all on its own.

  • Nozzle

Lose it and you're down to under half the thrust, with a shaky heading. Damage it and it overheats. Push it anyway and the engine flames out.

Nothing's gone for good. Limp home to the harbor and it bolts the missing pieces back on.

What breaks off keeps flying

Torn wings, shattered enemies and split asteroids all become real wreckage, with their own mass and momentum. Hit a chunk fast and it hurts. Knock one into an enemy and you've started a chain reaction.

Enemy wreckage glints gold. Match its speed and you scoop it up as scrap. Come in hot and it's just one more thing hitting you.

The harbor

Drift close and its tractor field reels you in. Dock to refuel, repair, refit lost parts and spend scrap in the shop. The enemies don't wait for your pit stop.

The hive

It launches every wave and shoots back. Crack it open for a hoard of weapons, always including the legendary Sunbreaker.

Lunatic Fling on iPhone: enemies burst into flying wreckage around the harbor, with a combo of times five and score pops.

Today's Sector

Once a day, the whole planet gets the same sky. Same suns, same planets, same waves. You get one shot at it.

Every dayNew sector in at 00:00 UTC

An example sector

THE TEAL DRIFT

  • Ringed giant
  • Black hole
  • Asteroid field
  1. A new sky at midnight UTC

The date picks the sector: its name, suns, planets, nebula and asteroid fields, and some days a black hole. Everyone on Earth gets the same one at the same moment.

  2. Your first launch is the one that counts

Tap Daily on the title screen. You get one scored attempt a day, locked in the moment you launch. After that, fly the same sky as practice as often as you like.

  3. Share the damage

When the run ends, share a result line: score, level, your best chain, and one square per level, so your friends can see exactly where it went wrong.

  4. See where you stand

With the Pilot's License, your score goes on the global daily leaderboard in Game Center, next to everyone who flew the same sky. Tomorrow: a new sector and a clean board.

Lunatic Fling on iPad: a black hole with a glowing pink accretion disk, and the ship holding position beside it.

Slingshot it. Orbit it. Try not to touch it.

Nearly half of all sectors have a black hole. Its gravity pulls on everything: you, the enemies, the wreckage, even your shots. Dive past it to slingshot beyond the speed limit, or settle into an orbit and let it do the flying.

Get too close and you get spaghettified: the tides pull your wings and fin off, a piece at a time. Cross the horizon and that's the run. Nobody ejects from in there.

Also on board

  • A soundtrack that plays along

The music is generated live as you fly. It changes style every level, from chiptune to deep dub, and follows the fight. If your own music is playing, it steps aside.

  • Haptics

Feel every hit, every part tearing off, every railgun charge and every docking thunk.

  • Controllers and keyboards

Xbox, PlayStation and MFi controllers work out of the box, and so does a hardware keyboard.

  • Stick or buttons

A floating touch stick by default, or discrete turn and thrust buttons if you prefer. Portrait or landscape.
